Lacuna Coil – Black Anima REVIEW 2019

BY KENNY LENEHAN

Italian gothic metal giants Lacuna Coil need little introduction since forming in 1994 they have risen to become a metal staple. Their unique blend of melodic mayhem has captured audiences worldwide with the classic tracks ‘Heaven’s A Lie’, ‘Our Truth’ and the iconic rendition of Depeche Mode’s anthem ‘Enjoy The Silence’ reaching cult status.  After announcing a winter tour in support of Black Amina (all UK dates sold out in record time) the hotly anticipated follow up to 2016s ‘Delirium’, which won over fans and critics alike,

Lacuna Coil return with Black Anima on 11 October 2019 via Century Media Records.

On first impressions I must admit I was both surprised and impressed by the impact

‘Sword Of Anger’ had on me, a fuller heavier sound that I didn’t associate with Lacuna Coil before. It’s excellent, and still retaining the signature Lacuna Coil sound featuring the outstanding vocal duties from Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, yet its fresh sounding to me.

‘Reckless’ has a few flavours to it, to me its a slight throwback with guitars having 00’s metal tone yet progressing to a catchy single vibe. Its full sounding with some interesting vocal melodies and modern bass tones that satisfy my palate. Lacuna Coil released an official music video for ‘Reckless’ which you can check out now, before the album’s release on 11 October.

‘Layers Of Time’ again has some impressive fry-style vocals from Andrea Ferro with a great beefy descending main riff that has groove elements that evolve into great vocal harmonies and an impressive breakdown. A simply excellent example of band on top of their game, without being dated.

Other tracks to look out for are Apocalypse, The End Is All I Can See and The End Is All I Can See.

As mentioned before, I am blown away at how full and well written the tracks on

Black Anima are. It shows the strength of the band and the progression they have made in their 20 years together. Branching out to an almost progressive metal sound that still possesses the iconic male and female vocals that put Lacuna Coil on the map.

Cristina Scabbia’s voice is still as mesmerising as it was the first time I heard it. Although I will admit I admired Lacuna Coil from a distance before, it’s now safe to say I feel won over by Black Amina.
